Detroit, MI- Two of the best fighters in the Mid-West will finally square off as former WXC Welterweight champion Dequan ‘The Tarantula’ Townsend (18-7) faces ‘The Hurricane’ Muhammed Abdullah (9-3). This match-up will be scheduled for five, five minute rounds as it will be for the WXC Interim Middleweight title. Current WXC Middleweight champion Joe ‘Diesel’ Riggs was unable to go for this fight card but eagerly awaits the winner for a bout later in 2018. The fight will also serve as the main event of WXC 71.
‘The Hurricane’ comes into this five round fight having won his last bout in August over another WXC competitor in Robert Gidron. He won that fight via unanimous decision in what was a five round affair as well. Abdullah is no stranger to the WXC steel as he has fought for the organization as an amateur. The 32 year Ohio native has been fighting professionally since 2013 and has won three of his nine pro wins by knockout. The number #2 ranked middleweight fighter in Michigan is looking to take that number #1 spot and interim title in his return to WXC for the first time since 2011.
After starting off 2017 with two loses, ‘The Tarantula’ ended the year strong with three straight wins and looks to roll that momentum into 2018. His last fight was a win over former UFC competitor Hector Urbina in October and just before that he defeated Willis Black at WXC 69 in July. The win over Black is also currently up for ‘WXC 2017 Knockout of the Year’ along with four other finishes. The Lansing, MI native has 15 career finishes with 13 of those coming by knockout. Townsend is already the #1 ranked middleweight in Michigan but he would like to keep that honor and add another WXC title to his collection at WXC 71.
Doors open at 6pm with the fights starting at 7pm on February 17th at the Crystal Gardens in Southgate, MI. More fights will be announced in the coming weeks along with ticket and broadcast information. Stayed tuned to WXCMMA.com for more information on WXC 71: Night of Champions X.
